Arthur Larie

Originally from Corsica, I am an independent photographer working mainly between France, the Horn of Africa, and the Middle East. I hold a Master’s degree in International Relations from the Institute of Political Studies in Aix-en-Provence.

My work focuses on documenting the consequences of violence in war zone — from trauma and war crimes to injustice — with a particular focus on its impact on younger generations.

I started photography after my studies by traveling alone with my camera along the Nile. This first project, called “The Tears of Paradise”, took me through Ethiopia, Sudan, and Egypt over seven months. It focused on documenting the tensions around sharing the Nile’s waters.

After this first project, I started in 2021 to document the Sudanese post revolution youth living in a country undergoing major changes due to political events like the revolution, coup d’état, and war. I spent several months in Khartoum following young revolutionaries during protests against the coup. Afterward, I traveled to conflict zones in Darfur and the Nuba Mountains to understand how these events have affected marginalized regions and their youth.

In June 2023, I also started a long-term project on violence in the West Bank. Inspired by the work of Palestinian psychiatrist Samah Jabr, I set out to document the trauma experienced by Palestinian children facing growing violence linked to the occupation.

These experiences have enabled me to collaborate with various newspapers such as Der Spiegel, Die Zeit, Le Figaro, Mediapart, the Globe and Mail, The Guardian,  as well as with Arte and Panafrican Music Magazine, for which I have produced two documentaries exploring the connection between music and revolution in Egypt and Sudan.
