THE ISLAND I WISH TO BELONG TO
“The island I wish to belong to” is a documentary photography project that aims to reconnect the fragments of my personal story with Corsica.
Through this series, I want to explore the conflicted relationship I have with Corsica and revisit the landscapes of my childhood and the history of my village to piece together my identity.
This project comes from a deep desire to bring together two worlds I have long set against each other. On one side, my intimate world—my family’s world—shaped by a continental-french culture; on the other, Corsica, a territory with which I have a complex relationship, marked by both love and misunderstanding.
To carry out this project, I decided to dive into my mother’s photographic archives, which span 30 years since she arrived in Corsica in the 1990s. These archives are a source of inspiration, showing my childhood and life in my village—the intimate Corsica where I grew up. With this project, I take over from my mother and continue to document this daily life, observing it from a new perspective.
The series is shot with my mother’s analog camera, one of the first she used when she arrived in Corsica. I found it in my room while looking for a way to start this series. The camera itself is part of the story I want to tell, representing the process of repairing and rebuilding the connection between my story and that of the island.
